FAQ's
Q: What medium(s) do you use to create your art?
A: In the areas of the art that calls for a solid black, I use a .005 tip Micron artist pen (instead of a shake & clog mechanical pen) that’s usually good for only one assignment, then it’s thrown away. Expensive, but faster & time is money.
I use a lot of marker pens, especially the cool & warm grays. For colors I use a combination of watercolor pencils & brushes. This gives me the shine & sparkle I need in tight places without the colors running together. For heavy saturation I use industrial-strength “Chartpak AD Marker” pens.
Q: How long does it take you to complete an assignment?
A: That’s a hard question to answer but, I’ll try and keep it simple. An architectural drawing, from a set of builder’s plans takes longer to complete then working from a photo of a completed structure. Working from a set of plans requires making a series of rough pencil sketches to ensure the perspective is right. There’s time involved in getting approvals and once I have the OK’s, then I proceed with the final color rendering, complete with my guess as to what the landscaping should look. So, in this case, a rendering of a structural can take up to 3-4 times longer to complete than using a photo as a model.
Often, I’m asked to come up with a conceptualized drawing based on ideas discussed with the client. I start with a large sketch pad full of blank sheets and keep tossing the rough scribbles until we agree we’re close enough to make a final “rough”. From that a finished rendering is produced. This process takes the longest to do and can be very stressful. This kind of drawing is identified as an “Artist rendering” and is subject to change.
Automotive & Marine art is quicker to do and usually, a lot more interesting (FUN) I’ll allow about 3 to 5 hours for a car drawing. 6 to 8 hours for a yacht. Add in the same amount of time to put In a specific background (home, park, resort, another car or, boat)
Q: What sizes of art do you produce?
A: My standard size is 13” x 17”. That’s because a 13” x 17” original fits in the center of a 16” x 20” frame, which is a standard size available at reasonable costs. My scanner & printer(s) are geared up to this size, which makes it easy to show proofs and make copies. Having said that, I also will work smaller and larger. My outer limits are about 18” x 24” because anything larger and I have to move outside my comfort zone onto a bigger drawing board. (away from my pens, pencils, straight & curved edges, etc.)
Q; Do you guarantee your work?
A: Yes I do! I’ll e-mail or, ground ship a proof of the finished art before it’s shipped. This ensures you’ll be happy/pleased with the final results. If there’s changes to the final work, every effort will be made on my part to correct it without going into a total re-do. If there are additions or, deletions to the work that were not discussed during the initial interview then, if possible, the changes will be made as long as it doesn’t compromise the final art. “Authors” changes usually require an adjustment to the originally agreed upon price.
Q: Do you use any computer programs to create your art?
A: NO! The only computer assists we use is for scanning the art to provide proofs, saving the art in our customer’s folders, retrieving saved art for making copies, communicating via e-mail, sending proofs, receiving photos to use as models. We (my assistant Jessica and me) use the computer to design CRUZ’N CARDS & NOTE CARDS and for general office administrative tasks.
I create all of my art by hand!
Q: What methods of shipping do you use?
A: We use FedEx ground as our standard unless instructed to use a quicker method. FedEx overnight & next business day delivery is available as a premium, extra cost service.
